MACEPA celebrates World Malaria Day
Friday, April 25 was the first World Malaria Day, commemorating the global effort to control malaria and reduce the toll it takes on individuals, families, and economies in endemic countries. MACEPA Advocacy Officer Todd Jennings blogged from Zambia throughout the week about national leadership in malaria control and covering local, national, and regional activities. Ethiopia completes malaria indicator
survey
On January 1, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, in partnership with its Central Statistics Agency, WHO, UNICEF, MACEPA, The Carter Center, the US President’s Malaria Initiative, and others, completed its first national-scale malaria indicator survey (MIS) using tools and methods developed by the Roll Back Malaria Partnership’s Monitoring and Evaluation Reference Group and tested in Zambia's 2006 MIS. Results will provide information on the national malaria burden and intervention coverage, and will allow Ethiopia to measure the impact of its ongoing malaria intervention scale-up efforts.

Roll Back Malaria Board meets in Ethiopia
Members of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Board, representing the malaria community worldwide, met in Addis Ababa November 28 and 29, 2007, to endorse approaches to escalate malaria prevention, treatment, and care and to achieve high-level coverage with malaria control interventions. SADC Malaria Week marks launch of new RBM regional network
On November 23, 2007, health ministers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) gathered in Zimbabwe to commemorate SADC Malaria Week and launch the Southern Africa Roll Back Malaria Network (SARN), which will be hosted by SADC and is the first RBM network linked to a regional economic block. Malaria Consortium Innovation Grants for malaria advocacy
The Malaria Consortium has issued its first round of three Innovation Grants to boost advocacy efforts by civil society organizations in Africa. Applications for the second round of grants were due December 10, 2007. Read more about these grants.
Global Fund announces Round 7 malaria grants
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has approved 28 new malaria grants in its seventh round of funding, which will contribute US$471 million to malaria control programs over the next two years. Sixty-two percent of the malaria applications were approved, the highest success rate ever. Read more about the Round 7 Global Fund grants.
New resources on using GIS for IRS
In 2007, Zambia’s National Malaria Control Centre (NMCC) used geographic information systems (GIS) to enumerate households and strengthen the information used to plan and implement indoor residual spraying (IRS) activities in targeted districts. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation convenes Malaria Forum
On October 16, 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation launched a three-day Malaria Forum in Seattle, Washington (USA). The event brought together representatives of organizations receiving malaria grants from the foundation, along with key foundation leadership and other global partners for a cross-disciplinary discussion of the issues most critical to the malaria community. Report from UNICEF and Roll Back Malaria highlights progress
A report just released, "Malaria and Children," chronicles remarkable progress across most sub-Saharan African countries in scaling up malaria prevention and control interventions. The report, which presents data obtained from the most recently conducted national surveys, shows that coverage of the major interventions has increased significantly, and nearly all countries now promote the use of artemisinin-based combination therapies.
